Certainly the assessors measured a sharp downturn in recruit quality from 1942 to 1944. Although this meant that potential recruits who were psychologically unsuited for service were more likely to be accepted earlier in the war, there was later general agreement amongst the psychological assessors that in terms of 'mental calibre' the 'quality' of the pre-1942 recruits had been higher. It should be noted that psychological assessment was introduced only in 1942.
